Excel: If Function

Part of Microsoft Excel Basics

Excel Excel: If FunctionExcel: The IF Statement

Conditional data in Excel

After a while of using Excel spreadsheets you get to a point where you need better control on how data is being presented to the end user. Quite often this requires you to make “interpretations” of the data to provide an outcome suitable to the business at hand. Well this is where (not always!) the IF function comes into play.

The purpose of the IF function in Excel is to allow you to control how data is displayed or derive a formula based on set values within the sheet. This video will explain how an if statement in Excel works and how you can control the results being returned. If statements are common place in spreadsheets so it is a key skill you will need to understand if your using Excel spreadsheets day to day in your job.

Following this video we will focus on the dreaded “Nested If”, this can be straight forward or ridiculously complex!  This will be covered on a subsequent Video and other better ways of performing evaluations on values…
