Analysis Services - Parent Child Dimensions

ssas1 Analysis Services Parent Child Dimensions SSAS Parent Child Hierarchies

So we have already spoken about Dimension Hierarchies through this course so far but there is one special relationship that we havent talked about. This is the Parent Child Hierarchy.

What are Parent Child Hierarchies ?

Parent Child Hierarchies are self referencing hierarchies which don’t technically need a hierarchy structure setup the same way as discussed so far because between two fields contained in the dimension they define the structure without the need to . Parent Child Hiearchies are a Natural Hierarchy but may not be a balanced one. The example discussed in this video is about employees and managers and how to control the unbalanced aspects of the hierarchy.

This video is one of many SSAS tutorials on this site click here for more.

Really nice videos but I think you’ve made a mistake here, in the last overview you still see David M Bradley twice (11:34) just at the same level.

Also I think I misunderstood what you were meaning when you said “David is his own manager”. How I read it is that Ken J Sánchez is David’s manager.
